November Athlete of the Month – Mark Makens
Congratulations to our male athlete of the month for November – Mark Makens! You’ll find Mark working out early mornings at BeachFit with his wife, Jessica. He is a man of few words, but we got him to open up a bit with his AOM interview and enlighten us about his life, routines, and habits! Great work, Mark. This is well deserved!
Tell us a little about yourself.
What’s something about you that others may not know about you? Any special talents, hobbies, or interests?
I grew up with five brothers in Minnesota, and we played sports to pass the time. We played hockey, football, baseball, golf, and sometimes tennis.
What do you like to do outside the gym?
I enjoy playing golf, riding my road bike, and exploring new places with my wife.
When did you start CrossFit? Why did you decide to join CrossFit at that time? What do you remember most about when you first started?
I started Beachfit in mid November 2017 on a golden ticket from Matt Fredricks. I started working out so that I could get my body back into shape. I remember my ab/ core muscles having constant soreness for the first couple months. It took a solid two months to establish proper technique and form. After that, I was able to attempt advance options of some movements.
CrossFit/BeachFit that has positively impacted your life?
The habit of showing up to the gym 5-6 days a week has been the most important habit/ behavior that has positively impacted my life. Having my wife, Jessica, as a work out partner gives us both accountability so that we make it to the gym.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that you live by?
When I am at the gym or working out, “keep moving” is something I keep in my head. My goal is to not quit and keep participating in the movement even if it is scaled. Keep Moving!
What do you do on days when you don’t “feel” like going to the gym, what keeps you motivated?
My wife keeps me motivated to go to the gym on the days when I don’t feel like going. It is hard to stay in bed when she gets up to go to the gym. I like to think this works the other way as well.
What do you love most about CrossFit Palm Beach?
I love the coaching. All of the coaches are great at giving tips to stay in proper form before and during the workout. I also love that workouts are consistently around 45 minutes.
What have you become better at saying “no” to?
I have been better at saying no to food that will not fuel the body. I have become more aware at the importance of the food we eat as it relates to performance throughout workouts and daily activities
