February Athlete of the Month – Matt Fredericks

By: 0

Congratulations to our male athlete of the month, Matt Fredericks! Matt has made major progress in our BeachFit program and works hard in class to push himself towards his goals. He is always smiling and friendly, even though you may have never heard him speak! He is a man of few words, but when you get him going he is a delight to chat with. We love having Matt in our 5:30am group. If you sleep in you’ll miss him so read more about him in his interview below!

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Matt Fredericks, 39 years old. Married to Allison for 9 years. I am a sixth grade math teacher for 16 years and currently coach the middle school boys basketball team at Independence Middle School.

What do you like to do outside the gym?

I enjoy golfing with friends, going on vacations, and visiting craft breweries.

When did you start CrossFit?  Why did you decide to join CrossFit at that time?  What do you remember most about when you first started?

I started BeachFit in October 2017. I wasn’t getting anything out of going to a regular gym (Gold’s Gym). My wife asked me to come and try a free class of BeachFit. I fell in love with it after the first week. I was getting so much more out of a BeachFit class than when I was wandering around Gold’s Gym trying to decide what to do next. The coach l

ed, prescribed warm-up, WOD, and stretches really made me feel like I worked out.

What has been your most memorable workout?

A workout that stands out in my mind was “Gizzard” on 11-22-18, Thanksgiving Morning. I felt that it really pushed you and it was a great way to start my holiday. We recently re-tested this workout and Instead of doing the prescribed men’s

workout I chose to challenge myself and comple

te the women’s advanced option. The funny thing about this workout was I was on the ski and everyone that was there around the same time got off and I kept skiing. I heard Allison call my name but didn’t know what she wanted and finally finished round 1 of 900m. I was only supposed to do 500. I was wondering why I was still there.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that you live by?

Don’t ever give up. Don’t ever give up- Jimmy V.

What is the most worthwhile investment you have made since starting here at CrossFit Palm Beach?

The most worthwhile investment has been living a healthy lifestyle. I had the gym part down, attending BeachFit 4-6 times a week but starting the nutrition challenge in January really has helped me set my priorities straight and provided me the guidance I have needed to put the whole package together.

What do you love most about CrossFit Palm Beach?

I love how clean the facility is, how supportive, motivating, and helpful the coaches are, and the feeling of family.
